Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans have been a simple answer to home cooling for more than a century. Sure, today we have air conditioning and heat pumps to deliver chilled air, but this type of cooling operates at a price—and that price is sometimes steep.

Humidity Inside Your Home

Is the humidity inside your home too low? Dry air can be a real problem when it comes to your family’s comfort and health Low levels of water vapor in the air can dry out and irritate skin. The respiratory system, which relies on moisture to fight off viruses and bacteria, dries out, making you more susceptible to colds, coughs, and asthma.

A Leak Isn't Always Caused by Your Roof

A Leak Isn't Always Caused by Your Roof:
Leaks can come from windows, flashings, AC's, siding, planters, pipes or water below the building. Try to be certain where the water is coming from before calling your roofer. Roofers often spend costly time looking for a leak only to find the water is coming from some other source.

Watering Restrictions

Water managers ordered that residents and businesses with an odd-numbered street address are to water landscapes on Wednesdays and Saturdays before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Those with an even-numbered address, or no street address, are to water their lawns Thursdays and Sundays during the same times.

Save Money On Your Landscaping

Check alternate resources. Look beyond stores and catalogs for bargains. Arboretums and botanical centers often hold plant sales, and neighbors may have extra perennials to share. Some cities offer free mulch and compost, and construction and demolition sites can be sources of bricks and stones.

Landscaping Tips

Shop online and mail-order sources. Catalogs and web sites expand your choices, especially for rare plants and specialized products. Shopping online or by phone is convenient, and prices may be lower than in stores, but don't forget to include shipping costs when comparing prices with local sources.

Rain Gutter Maintenance

When gutters and downspouts become clogged or fail, rainwater flowing down house walls to the ground can cause a great deal of damage. At the very least, this water taxes paint and wriggles into cracks, contributing to the eventual decay of siding and the house’s structure.

Save Money On Landscaping

Save Money On Landscaping: Accept cheaper when it's good enough. With some items, there's little difference in quality between top-of-the-line and economy. Why pay more? Take advantage of a home improvement warehouse's volume buying power for bargains on common annuals and perennials, mulch, pavers, and containers. Inspect plants closely, however. A "big box" store may not care for them the way a nursery would.

Water Softners

Installing a water softener calls for basic plumbing skills. Unless you’re simply replacing an old water softener, you may need to cut into and connect new fittings and pipes. (If you have copper pipes, see Cutting & Joining Copper Pipe for how-to help.) If doing it yourself looks like too much trouble, consider hiring a local prescreened water softener installation pro.

Watering Efficiently

A healthy lawn makes a very good filter for absorbing many things that can be washed into our streams. The ideal lawn is one that will grow best in your environment without lots of supplemental watering. We have all probably read about people living in desert areas in the country trying to grow lawns that require almost daily watering just to survive the summer heat. This is extremely foolish and short-sighted. Turf grasses were never intended to be grown everywhere.

That being said, there are parts of the country where various turf grasses are well suited without the need for daily watering. In many places, grass can be grown without any supplemental watering, or only very minor supplemental watering.

Residential Pool Owners

Our goal is to educate all our pool owners about the new laws in order to make the right decisions for your pool. We want to inform you that in less than six months the Florida state legislature has passed a bill to add a new State Law to be enacted July 1, 2011 that will affect everyone in the state with a swimming pool. Under the proposed law all residential swimming pool pumps must comply with the Florida Energy Efficiency Code. In short, all single speed pumps rated above 1hp will no longer be manufactured or can be sold in the State of Florida.

Believe it or not, there are actual benefits of this upcoming law for consumers. Did you know that your pool pump is the #1 energy consumption appliance in the home? As we have have mentioned, we would like to offer you the option to upgrade the pool pump to a Pentair IntelliFlo VS + SVRS.

Your return on investment for this new pump will be less than 24 months, and then going forward you will have the benefit of saving $807 each year on your FP&L bills. (Approximately 90% savings each month) We always enlighten our customers that the savings is almost the equivalent of receiving your weekly pool maintenance for free.

The cost of a new Pentair IntelliFlo VS + SVRS with standard installation, all materials and sales tax can be done for under $2,000. Upon your request we can send a formal proposal for your authorization. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Call Chip Sollins today, 561.775.4782.

Refrigerator Repairs

As a rule, refrigerators are designed to maintain 36–40 degrees F. in the refrigerator box and 0–5 degrees F. in the freezer box. If your refrigerator compartment freezes its contents, even when the cold control is set to its lowest setting, the control is probably defective.

Washing Machine Shakes, Vibrates, or Moves

A washer usually shakes or vibrates when it isn’t sitting firmly and level on the floor or because it has an out-of-balance wash load. First eliminate the possibility of the latter—adjust the load if it has scrunched up on one side of the tub. Then check the machine for solid, level support. For the machine to work properly, the floor must be flat, level, and strong enought to support the heavy, water-filled washer without deflecting under the load.
  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Look under the washer and make sure all feet are resting firmly on the floor.
  3. Make sure the front legs have rubber caps and locking nuts to keep them tight. If they don’t, buy these parts and install them.
  4. Make the front feet as short as possible by screwing them up into the machine. Place a level on top of the washing machine and adjust the front feet slightly if needed to level the washer; do not fully extend them.
  5. If necessary, tilt the washing machine forward, which will allow the back feet to self-adjust. Recheck for level, and adjust the front feet again.
  6. Plug in the machine, and run it empty through the spin cycle to see if it still vibrates. If it does, call a repairperson or contact the manufacturer or possible solutions.
